What’s the most obscure place you’ve ever played?
Claire: Our philosophy as a touring entity is to pretty much always say yes unless it’s technically, physically, or financially impossible.
Jona: Near the Tibetan plateau in China is probably the most obscure. We’ve played a lot of places where bands don’t play.
Claire: Rural China, South Korea, a lot of Eastern European cities, South America, Mexico. We’ve played in weird suburbs and teen centers all around America. We love pushing the boundaries of what is a show. The closer you can get to an experience where people aren’t expecting a traditional rock and roll environment or don’t know what a traditional rock and roll environment is because they’ve never really had it, those are the experiences and the places where the most interesting kinds of things can happen. There are no expectations at all and that’s really fun. That keeps us kind of scared and vulnerable and honest. You can’t be complacent when you’re playing a weird teahouse in China. You have to bring yourself to the forefront.
