We are all born into this world with nesting helixes of genetic information within our veins that differentiate us from the other animals, or the inanimate matter that populates our planet, but not — in essence — from one another. What we do with our time here and what we become is limited only by our ambition, taste, and willingness to stand down the glaring void that looms at the end of life. This is to say, and here the tabloid screed holds true, “Celebrities Are People Too,” at least in origin. From there, anyone can invent their category; there was no “Ryan Gosling” before Ryan Gosling decided to carve our his place. The aura that follows a celebrity isn’t something particular about their talent, but rather the collective understanding that Here is a Person Who Chose. A shared awe we feel at the power of self-determination. In its purest manifestation, a celebrity is the ultimate in self-empowerment: they have made their name into words, their body into a symbol, created by virtue of dedication to their craft (or their person) a field of special seperateness from the world. Gosling, here, is YACHT’s metaphor: may we all become swans of our world.
